Defense Appropriations Bill benefits Inouye contributors

This AP story published by the Honolulu Star Bulletin gives an update on military earmarks by Senator Inouye and the Hawai’i Congressional Delegation benefiting companies that gave to their campaigns.  Here’s the earlier report in the Honolulu Star Bulletin: http://www.starbulletin.com/news/20091109_inouyes_earmarks_go_to_his_donors.html Looks like Oceanit made out with $9 million in earmarks in the new Defense Appropriations… Read more »

Defense Bill Earmarks Total $4 Billion

I think that the earmarks are even higher than $4 billion.  One trick I have seen is ‘plus up’ monies (monies added to the budget by Congress) may not be necessarily earmarked for a specific company, but are very narrowly defined so that only one company can fulfill. When these tailor-made projects are put out… Read more »

Support Plowshares activists who broke into nuclear missile base

Five Plowshares activists broke into the Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor to symbolically disarm nuclear weapons stored there.   I admire the loving courage of the Plowshares activists.  Unlike consumer Christians who try to buy their salvation with trendy merchandise like the “WWJD” (What Would Jesus Do?) products, the Plowshares activists are for real. They truly ask “What… Read more »

Ian Lind posted archival materials from the Hawaii People’s Coalition for Peace and Justice circa 1971.   It is both encouraging and depressing to see that the themes and struggles from forty years ago are still relevant to the movement today.    One of the archived documents that caught my eye, an open letter to Americans from… Read more »
