Call To Action

DMZ Hawaii Aloha Aina will be holding a demonstration outside of the Hawai'i Women's Political Caucus meeting, Tuesday, August 14th at the Waikiki Yacht Club from 4:30 to 5:30pm.

Both Congressional Representatives will be speaking at the meeting. Our action will specifically challenge Neil Abercrombie.

We want our action to convey to Rep. Abercrombie that we oppose basing the Stryker Brigade in Hawai`i. We also want to expose him for his political double talk. He has said he's against the war, but has fought to appropriate funds for the largest military build-up and military expansion in Hawai`i and throughout the Pacific. He has said he opposes the war in Iraq, but continues to vote to fund the war.

Our protest is not aimed at the women of the Hawai`i Women's Political Caucus. Several women will be honored at this event, including Colleen Hanabusa. We extend our thanks to Colleen for her promotion of environmental justice in Hawai`i. However, we do ask that women attending this event recognize our community's right to voice their opposition to the current military build-up and the increasing militarization of our islands, and encourage them to take a similar stand.

The people of Hawai`i have spoken. Hundreds of us have spoken at hearings, but our voices have been disregarded. We have witnessed the way the Army has manipulated the hearing process to render our voices powerless and no longer have any confidence in the hearing process. We have voted in polls including the recent Star Bulletin poll where the basing of the Stryker was opposed 4:1.

NO MEANS NO

In spite of overwhelming opposition to the basing of the Stryker Brigade and military expansion in Hawai's, Hawai'is Congressional representatives continue to support it. In spite of overwhelming opposition to the war in Iraq, Hawai`i's Congressional representatives continue to vote to fund it. We are determined to hold them accountable and are committed to finding ways to make our voices heard every time Hawai`i's Congressional representatives make a public appearance.

Join us on Tuesday to speak out against the Stryker Brigade, the military build-up in Hawai`i and the Pacific, the growing militarization of our society, and the war in Iraq.

Gather in front of the Waikiki Yacht Club at 4:30 pm on Tuesday, August 14th. Look for the STOP THE STRYKER BRIGADE banner. We will provide an orientation and will have some signs. You're invited to bring your own as well.
