{"id":10011,"date":"2011-12-16T02:36:33","date_gmt":"2011-12-16T11:06:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dmzhawaii.org\/?p=10011"},"modified":"2011-12-16T02:36:33","modified_gmt":"2011-12-16T11:06:33","slug":"%e2%80%9cwe-are-the-many-across-the-pacific-blue-continent%e2%80%9d","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dmzhawaii.org\/?p=10011","title":{"rendered":"\u201cWe Are the Many &#8211; Across the Pacific Blue Continent\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Listen to a podcast of the &#8220;Blue Pacific Continent&#8221; forum that was held in Guam on November 30, 2011 via <a href=\"http:\/\/kprg.podbean.com\/.\">Beyond The Fence<\/a>, a program of Public Radia Guam- KPRG 89.3 FM:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I\u00a0invite you to tune in to Beyond the Fence\u00a0which airs every Friday\u00a0at noon on Public Radio Guam-KPRG 89.3 FM, immediately following Democracy Now. \u00a0This one hour locally\u00a0produced\u00a0program features\u00a0interviews with diverse individuals on a variety of topics that explore the complexities of the US military presence in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands and\u00a0the challenges of building community &#8216;beyond the fence.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Episode 97 \u201cWe Are the Many &#8211; Across the Pacific Blue Continent, Part II\u201d (hosted by Dr. Vivian Dames with production assistance of Lydia Taleu) airs 12\/16\/11.<\/p>\n<p>On 12\/2\/11 we aired Episode 95\u00a0 \u201cWe Are Many &#8211; Across the Pacific Blue Continent, Part I\u201d\u00a0 which featured presentations by Kenneth Gofigan Kuper and Victoria-Lola Leon Guerrero, two of four panelists at the public forum held at the University of Guam on November 30, 2011 entitled \u201cThe Pacific\u00a0 Blue Continent:\u00a0 Militarized Experiences in Hawai\u2019i, the Marshall Islands and Guahan.\u201d\u00a0 This forum was jointly sponsored by the Division of Social Work and the Guahan Coalition for Peace and Justice.<\/p>\n<p>In Part II today, we feature the presentations at this public forum by Mrs. Abacca Anjain-Maddison of the Marshall Islands and Kyle Kajihiro of Hawai\u2019i.\u00a0 They visited Guam on their return from the solidarity conference &#8216;For a nuclear weapon-free, peaceful\u00a0Asia-Pacific\u00a0without military bases\u201d sponsored by the Japan Peace Committee held in Naha, Okinawa November 23-26.\u00a0 We also include part of the Q &amp; A session with all four panelists discussing alternative uses of returned military land, island sustainability, the importance of inter-generational activism and moving from intellectual dialogue to direct action.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Anjain-Maddison (<a href=\"http:\/\/mc\/compose?to=waanjonok@yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">waanjonok@yahoo.com<\/a>) is a former Senator and Representative of Rongelap Island in the Marshall Islands which was most damaged by the radioactive fallout of US H Bomb tests conducted at the Bikini Atoll.\u00a0 As daughter of the Anjain family that led the struggle of the Rongelap people, she continues to advocate for justice and compensation for Rongelap people.\u00a0 She also works for the establishment of the Rongelap Peace Museum to make known the nuclear tragedy of their\u00a0 island to the people of the world.\u00a0 She has participated in the 2008-2010 Bikini Day events, the 2010 New York Action and the 2010-2011 World Conference Against Nuclear Bombs [see also Ep. 12 (4\/9\/10) \u201cEnvironmental Justice and Radiation Exposure\u201d].<\/p>\n<p>Kyle Kajihiro (<a href=\"mailto:kyle.kajihiro@gmail.com\" target=\"_blank\">kyle.kajihiro@gmail.com<\/a>) is a 4th generation man of Japanese ancestry who was born and raised in Honolulu.\u00a0 He has worked on peace and demilitarization issues since 1996 with the American Friends Service Committee Hawai\u2019i Area Program, which is now Hawai\u2019i Peace and Justice.\u00a0 He coordinates activities and communication for the DMZ Hawai\u2019i- Aloha \u2018Aina network and is involved in campaigns to protect various sites on the island of Oahu from US military activities.
