{"id":6098,"date":"2010-02-24T22:24:51","date_gmt":"2010-02-25T06:54:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dmzhawaii.org\/?p=6098"},"modified":"2010-02-24T22:24:51","modified_gmt":"2010-02-25T06:54:51","slug":"pacific-activists-link-up-against-buildup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dmzhawaii.org\/?p=6098","title":{"rendered":"Pacific activists link up against buildup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mvguam.com\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=11059%3A-regions-activists-link-up-against-buildup&amp;Itemid=11\">http:\/\/mvguam.com\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=11059%3A-regions-activists-link-up-against-buildup&amp;Itemid=11<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Region\u2019s activists link up against buildup<\/h2>\n<p>Tuesday, 23 February 2010 03:08 by Mar-Vic Cagurangan | Variety News Staff<\/p>\n<p>ACTIVISTS from Guam and the CNMI, joined by their supporters from Okinawa and Hawaii, are holding a protest rally today at the front gate of Pacific Command Headquarters at Camp Smith in \u2018Aiea, Oahu, to oppose the military expansion in the Marianas.<\/p>\n<p>Joining the Guam and CNMI groups are students from Okinawa and members of the American Friends Service Committee and DMZ Hawai\u2019i\/Aloha \u2018Ain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe grassroots voices of our people are being ignored by the military, U.S. politicians and the mainstream media,\u201d said Kisha Borja-Kicho\u2019cho\u2019, a University of Hawai\u2019i student and a coordinator for the local organization \u201cFight for Guahan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, we came to deliver a message directly to the Commander of the U.S. military in the Pacific that we, the peoples of Guahan, the Northern Marianas, Okinawa and Hawai\u2018i reject any further military build up in the Pacific. Our islands are not weapons to be used in wars against other peoples and countries. We demand peace,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Hope Cristobal, criticized the Department of Defense\u2019s plan to take over 40 percent of Guam, where citizens are excluded from voting in national elections.<\/p>\n<p>Retired U.S. Army Reserve Colonel Ann Wright said that across the Pacific, including  in Okinawa, Guam and Hawai\u2018I, people are opposing the military expansion in the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want Admiral Willard to hear this: No means no.  When you force yourself on someone against their will, it\u2019s called rape-rape of the people, the culture and the land. We Americans must stop our government\u2019s military expansion in the Pacific,\u201d Wright said.<\/p>\n<p>AFSC Hawai\u2018i program director Kyle Kajihiro said Okinawa has been presented with false options.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemoving bases and troops from Okinawa, does not require moving them to Guam or Hawai\u2018i.
