{"id":8607,"date":"2011-03-18T10:07:19","date_gmt":"2011-03-18T18:37:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dmzhawaii.org\/?p=8607"},"modified":"2011-03-18T10:07:19","modified_gmt":"2011-03-18T18:37:19","slug":"1-in-5-air-force-women-and-1-in-20-men-victims-of-sexual-assault","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dmzhawaii.org\/?p=8607","title":{"rendered":"1 in 5 Air Force Women and 1 in 20 Men Victims of Sexual Assault"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Service Women\u02bbs Action Network:<a href=\"www.servicewomen.org\"> www.servicewomen.org<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\nService Women\u2019s Action Network Statement on Air Force Survey<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Christian Science Monitor Previews Survey\u2019s Release:\u00a0 1 in 5 Air Force Women and 1 in 20 Men Victims of Sexual Assault<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NEW YORK \u2013 According to an exclusive piece published today online in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/USA\/Military\/2011\/0317\/Exclusive-1-in-5-Air-Force-women-victim-of-sexual-assault-survey-finds?cmpid=addthis_mailto\">Christian Science Monitor<\/a>, the Air Force is set to release a comprehensive survey later this week that finds almost 1 in 5 women and 1 in 20 men in the Air Force say they have been sexually assaulted or raped since joining the service.\u00a0 According to the story, among the women surveyed, 58% revealed they had been raped and 20% had been sodomized.\u00a0 Additionally, almost half of the victims didn\u2019t report the crime because they \u201cdid not want to cause trouble in their unit.\u201d\u00a0 To read the entire exclusive Christian Science Monitor story online, click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/USA\/Military\/2011\/0317\/Exclusive-1-in-5-Air-Force-women-victim-of-sexual-assault-survey-finds?cmpid=addthis_mailto\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In reaction to the findings outlined in the story earlier today, Anu Bhagwati, executive director of Service Women\u2019s Action Network (SWAN), released the following statement:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt should be no surprise that rape, sexual assault and sexual harassment are an every day fact of life for women in the Air Force, and every any other branch of the military,\u201d said Anu Bhagwati, former Marine Corps Captain and Executive Director of Service Women\u2019s Action Network.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite having more women than any other branch of service, it\u2019s clear that the Air Force, like the rest of the military, is in over its head when it comes to reducing this threat to our servicemembers,&#8221; Bhagwati continued. &#8220;Survivors don\u2019t feel safe enough to report their attacks, and frankly, there\u2019s little reason for them to feel safe in today\u2019s military climate. Senior military leadership has failed to protect survivors, punish perpetrators or hold commanders accountable for failing to enforce sexual assault policy. Immediate legislative action by our elected officials is the best tool we have to stop this crisis now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to today\u2019s leak of the Air Force survey scheduled for release later this week, the Department of Defense\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapr.mil\/\">Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office (SAPRO) <\/a>released its FY 2010 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapr.mil\/media\/pdf\/reports\/DoD_Fiscal_Year_2010_Annual_Report_on_Sexual_Assault_in_the_Military.pdf\">\u201cAnnual Report on Sexual Assault in the Military\u201d<\/a>.\u00a0 The SAPRO FY 2010 \u201cAnnual Report on Sexual Assault in the Military\u201d can be viewed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapr.mil\/\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapr.mil\/\"><br \/>\n<\/a><br \/>\nThe 622 page report was released moments ago, revealing 3158 reports of sexual assault military-wide in FY10, and is being further analyzed by SWAN\u2019s experts.
