{"id":8797,"date":"2011-05-09T21:55:06","date_gmt":"2011-05-10T06:25:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dmzhawaii.org\/?p=8797"},"modified":"2011-05-09T21:55:06","modified_gmt":"2011-05-10T06:25:06","slug":"marine-corps-to-phase-out-sea-stallion-helicopter-the-type-involved-in-crashes-off-kaneohe-and-in-okinawa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dmzhawaii.org\/?p=8797","title":{"rendered":"Marine Corps to phase out Sea Stallion helicopter, the type involved in crashes off Kaneohe and in Okinawa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Marine Corps&#8217; helicopter that crashed in Kaneohe Bay in March killing a crew member was Sea Stallion.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.staradvertiser.com\/news\/20110509__Marine_Corps_to_phase_out_old_helicopters.html\">Honolulu Star Advertiser<\/a> reports that the Sea Stallions will be retired from service:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">After a start that came during the Vietnam War, the  Marine Corps&#8217; aging CH-53D Sea Stallion helicopters \u2014 the type that  crashed       in Kaneohe Bay in March, killing a crew member \u2014 are  expected to be completely retired from service in the next year and a        half, officials said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A replacement program could begin as early as      September, when the first of 12 newer and more capable CH-53E Super  Stallions is expected to take up residence with Marine    Heavy  Helicopter Squadron 463,     a unit now in southern Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A squadron of 12 MV-22 tilt-rotor Osprey aircraft,  meanwhile, is tentatively scheduled to arrive in Hawaii in 2014, the  Corps       said.<\/p>\n<p>The article also mentioned that this is the same type of helicopter that crashed into a building of the Okinawa International University in 2004:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">One of the Hawaii-based choppers crashed on Aug. 13, 2004, on the  grounds of Okinawa International University in Japan.
