{"id":9761,"date":"2011-11-06T23:21:10","date_gmt":"2011-11-07T07:51:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dmzhawaii.org\/?p=9761"},"modified":"2011-11-06T23:21:10","modified_gmt":"2011-11-07T07:51:10","slug":"apecs-first-defining-moments-1-man-dead-8-arrested-for-peaceful-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dmzhawaii.org\/?p=9761","title":{"rendered":"APEC&#8217;s first defining moments:  1 man dead, 8 arrested for peaceful protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An alleged murder in Waikiki involving a federal agent and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.staradvertiser.com\/news\/breaking\/133313283.html\">arrests of (De)Occupy Honolulu protesters<\/a> have heralded the debut of APEC 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Confusing details are emerging about the alleged killing of Kollin Elderts by off-duty APEC state department agent Christopher Deedy, an incident Ian Lind calls the <a href=\"http:\/\/ilind.net\/2011\/11\/06\/shooting-is-first-defining-moment-of-apec\/\">&#8220;first defining moment of APEC&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.khon2.com\/mostpopular\/story\/Suspect-in-deadly-shooting-identified-as-special\/DeUmEyPESEWb_nTA1PtpHw.cspx\">KHON<\/a> reported that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Witnesses say 27-year-old Christopher Deedy stayed with the victim, trying to stop his bleeding until EMS arrived.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I walked out there was a guy covered in blood holding the guy&#8217;s chest just to keep him from bleeding to death,&#8221; Davus says.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses also say when police arrived, Deedy told them &#8221; I was the one who shot him.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.staradvertiser.com\/news\/20111106_Federal_agent_arrested_in_fatal_shooting.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter\">Honolulu Star Advertiser report<\/a> contradicts this account:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Deedy was identified and arrested a short distance away at 2234 Kuhio Ave. at 3 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>A man wearing a collared shirt ran from the restaurant, heading in the Ewa direction, Evans said. Inside McDonald&#8217;s, Evans said, a man was holding on to the victim, trying to keep him from collapsing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.khon2.com\/mostpopular\/story\/Suspect-in-deadly-shooting-identified-as-special\/DeUmEyPESEWb_nTA1PtpHw.cspx\">KHON <\/a>also reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Witnesses say the 23 year-old man was shot once in the chest.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiinewsnow.com\/story\/15967707\/police-investigating-fatal-shooting-in-waikiki#.Trbd9Tka4cY.facebook\">Hawaii News Now<\/a> reported several shots were fired.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I heard bam and it woke me up. And I kind of stirred and wondered where that came from. And then I heard bam, bam, bam shortly after that,&#8221; Reinking told Hawaii News Now.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This was also corroborated by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.staradvertiser.com\/news\/20111106_Federal_agent_arrested_in_fatal_shooting.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter\">Honolulu Star Advertiser<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Chuck Crowell, who is renting a unit at the Royal Kuhio vacation condominium across from the McDonald&#8217;s, said he was lying down in his room when he heard, &#8220;Pow! Pow! Then a pause. Then pow again.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiinewsnow.com\/story\/15972354\/attorney-victims-family-claims-fatal-confrontation-began\">Hawaii News Now reports<\/a> that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>According to [Elderts\u02bb] family, [Christopher Deedy] followed Elderts to the restaurant.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.staradvertiser.com\/news\/breaking\/133340068.html\">Honolulu Star Advertiser reports<\/a> that Deedy &#8220;has been charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What makes this tragic killing so creepy is that the government will not confirm that Deedy, a State Department security agent, is in Honolulu for APEC.\u00a0\u00a0 What are they hiding?<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile the nascent (De)Occupy Honolulu movement has launched its protests into the international news with the arrest of eight people Saturday night.\u00a0 The protesters cited the first amendment and a Hawaiian law declared by Kamehameha I &#8220;Kanawai Mamala Hoe&#8221; (The Law of the Splintered Paddle&#8221; as their &#8220;permit&#8221; to be in the park after 10 pm in solidarity with the homelesss who have been swept from parks, overpasses and other safe havens to &#8220;clean up&#8221; Honolulu for the APEC invasion.\u00a0 As the protesters said &#8220;Our rights do not end at 10 pm!&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a clip of their statement a moment before they were arrested:<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/--Bh-zy84lg\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An alleged murder in Waikiki involving a federal agent and arrests of (De)Occupy Honolulu protesters have heralded the debut of APEC 2011.
